Work from anywhere, choose your projects, answer to no one. IT freelancing sounds like a dream. But behind the laptop-on-a-beach photos, reality is far more nuanced.
I'm not a freelancer myself yet. But this question keeps coming up, and I know many of you are asking it too. So instead of staying in the fog, I decided to conduct serious research: forums, blogs, testimonials, analysis of legal structures, platforms, and 2026 market data.
This guide is the result of that research. No golden promises. Just facts, figures, and tools to make an informed decision.
As a freelancer, you don't have an employer: you have clients. You sell your technical skills by the day, mission, or project. You manage everything yourself — your accounting, taxes, prospecting, and time off.
| Profile | Demand | Average ADR |
|---|---|---|
| Developer (React, Python, Node.js) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | €500–700/day |
| DevOps / SRE | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | €600–850/day |
| Cloud Consultant (AWS, Azure, GCP) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | €600–900/day |
| Data Engineer / Analyst | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | €550–750/day |
| Cybersecurity Expert | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | €650–950/day |
| Tech Project Manager | ⭐⭐⭐ | €500–700/day |
If you have in-demand technical skills and at least 2-3 years of experience, you have good chances of launching.
⚠️ The myth to deconstruct: freelancing isn't just "coding in freedom". It's a real entrepreneurial activity.
IT freelancing offers many advantages. Here are some of the main benefits you could gain from this career:
These advantages can make IT freelancing a very attractive career for those seeking to balance their personal and professional lives while developing their skills and increasing their income.
💡 Blue line = Employee · Orange line = Freelance. The gap widens significantly with experience.
The challenges of IT freelancing are often underestimated. Here are some of the main difficulties you might encounter:
By knowing these challenges in advance, you can prepare for them and better navigate the IT freelance world.
| Protection | Employee | Freelance |
|---|---|---|
| Health Insurance | 50% covered by employer | 100% your responsibility |
| Unemployment | Standard unemployment insurance | Voluntary contribution (limited) |
| Sick Leave | Benefits from day 1 | Very low benefits |
| Retirement | Employee + employer contributions | Lower contributions |
| Disability Insurance | Included (collective agreement) | Must subscribe separately |
⚠️ Critical point: without disability insurance, 2 months unable to work (accident, illness) can endanger your financial situation. Plan ahead before launching.
In France, three main paths are available. The decision tree below helps you find the right one.
For whom? Those starting out or wanting to test without administrative complexity.
Setup in 10 minutes on the URSSAF website. Free. Immediate. Simplified accounting (a revenue book is enough). Charges calculated only on revenue collected (21 to 45%).
Main limitation: cap at €77,700/year (2026). As you approach it, you must plan to change status.
For whom? Those who want freelance freedom with employee security.
You remain an employee of a portage company (Prium Portage, ITG, Webportage...). They invoice on your behalf and pay you a salary after their management fees (5 to 15%). In exchange: payslip, health insurance, benefits, unemployment, retirement.
Main limitation: management fees that reduce net income.
For whom? Freelancers with revenue above €70,000–80,000/year.
Tax optimization possible (salary + dividends), no revenue cap. In exchange: accountant required (€100-200/month) and more complex setup procedures.
Three proven methods to find freelance missions:
| Platform | Target Profiles | Commission | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malt | All levels | 10% (sliding) | Large mission catalog |
| Comet | Confirmed / Experts | 0% (freelancer side) | Better-paid missions |
| FreelanceRepublik | Tech profiles | 0% | Active tech community |
Sign up for all three. Optimize your profile (portfolio, certifications, concrete projects) and apply actively in the first weeks.
An effective LinkedIn message is short and precise:
"Hi, I'm a freelance DevOps with 5 years of experience on Kubernetes and Terraform. I see you're working on cloud-native projects. I'd love to connect if you're looking for additional support."
💡 "React developer" → thousands of competing profiles. "React Native expert for mobile payment applications" → a handful of freelancers in the market. The more you specialize, the higher your rate can go.
Your niche can be a technology (Rust, Go, Terraform), a sector (fintech, healthtech), or a mission type (cloud migrations, CI/CD, container security).
A client asks: "What's your ADR?" How much should you charge?
Target annual gross salary × 2 ÷ 200 days = Minimum ADRExample: you're targeting €50,000 annual gross salary.
€50,000 × 2 = €100,000 → €100,000 ÷ 200 = €500/day
| Profile | Experience | ADR Paris | ADR Province / Remote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior | 0–2 years | €350–450/day | €300–400/day |
| Confirmed | 3–5 years | €500–650/day | €450–550/day |
| Senior | 5–10 years | €650–850/day | €600–750/day |
| Expert / Architect | 10+ years | €850–1200/day | €750–1000/day |
Factors that increase rates: urgent mission (+15–20%), rare technology like Rust or Go (+20–30%), regulated sector (finance, health, defense) (+15–25%).
⚠️ A client paying you €250/day will never accept €500 six months later. And after taxes and expenses, €250/day leaves you with almost nothing. If you can't find missions, the problem rarely comes from the rate — it's your profile, pitch, or prospecting.
Essential tools to get organized:
Before starting, always sign a contract. Essential clauses:
Free templates are available on the URSSAF website and on Freelance-info.
✅ Mistake 1 - Launching without savings: secure 3-6 months of expenses before launching. Real payment delays (30-60 days) and gaps between contracts can create rapid financial pressure.
✅ Mistake 2 - Stopping prospecting: prospect continuously, even on mission. "I have 6 months of work ahead" is the best way to find yourself with nothing after.
✅ Mistake 3 - Not selective enough: accepting any mission out of fear wears you out quickly and blocks good opportunities. Even "stepping stone missions" should be strategically chosen.
✅ Mistake 4 - Skipping admin work: block one fixed half-day per week. "I'll do it tonight" never works long-term.
✅ Mistake 5 - Not training: reserve 5-10% of your time and budget. React 16 was essential in 2021. In 2026, clients look for React 19 and modern patterns. Training maintains your rate.
IT freelancing isn't for everyone. If you need stability and uncertainty weighs on you, full-time employment remains an excellent option — and there's no shame in choosing it.
But if you love autonomy, want to accelerate your growth, and are ready to take charge of sales and administration — it's a path that can radically transform your career and income.
I'm continuing my reflection. Maybe I'll take the leap someday. Maybe not. But now, at least, we know exactly what to expect.
Thanks for following along on this journey! 🍺
